Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics

There are many activities of interest in syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, both in the department, around the University, and in the greater Chicago area. In addition to the core classes in these areas, there are generally three advanced graduate seminars in the department each year covering changing topics, as well as courses in other departments, such as computer science, philosophy, psychology, and human development. Supplementing these are departmental colloquia and the annual Chicago Linguistics Society meeting, which brings in a range of cutting edge work in all fields of linguistics. Occasional workshops and symposia complement the meetings of the Chicago Syn-Sem Circle (CSC), at which faculty and students from Chicago area universities present their work in an informal setting, generally over a potluck dinner at someone's house.
